Being an alcoholic and having issues on alcohol abuse is entirely different from each other. Most people think they are the same thing, and this is one of the reasons why finding effective ways of quitting their addiction fails. Alcohol abuse problem is when a person drinks alcohol in excess and in turn, suffers from health conditions brought about by abusing such a substance. For alcoholics, they should stop drinking, start thinking for a better health and longer life.
There is a big difference between an alcohol abuser and an alcoholic. The former can still perform normally and go about his or her daily life, without showing signs of intoxication. These people can control their alcohol intake but still, their alcohol consumption is much higher than what an average drinker consumes.
Alcoholics on the other hand, cannot control their alcohol consumption because they are already addicted to the substance. These people are affected by alcohol both mentally and physically. Because they cannot control their alcohol intake, alcoholics cannot function properly and their work performance is often affected. While they think they need more alcohol, their physical and mental state are further affected and they feel like having a drink the whole day will get them through. While these continuously happen, they find it harder and harder to control their urges. Knowing this, people who are abusing alcoholic substance should be smart enough to stop drinking, start thinking so that they will not reach the level of being an alcoholic.
It is possible for both alcoholics and people who abuse alcohol to quit their drinking habits and start being alcohol free. However, the methods involved are handled uniquely. People who abuse alcohol need more emotional and psychological support so that they can limit their alcohol intake whereas, alcoholics deal with withdrawal symptoms that are often hard to deal with. Thus, making it harder for alcoholics to quit their vice because alcohol withdrawal symptoms often lead them to relapse.
Stop drinking, start thinking should be the motto of alcoholics and abusers. Having the determination and commitment in quitting will make it easier to stop drinking and start living a healthier lifestyle.
One reason why people should stop abusing alcoholic substances and lose control because of intoxication is because recent studies have shown the rising number of domestic violence can be attributed to alcoholism.
Until now, nobody can fully conclude whether the increase in domestic violence is a result of alcoholism or, if domestic violence is the reason for alcohol abuse. Whatever the truth may be, alcohol is present when there is domestic violence. In fact, a lot of family and homes suffer from abuse daily. Another sad reality we have to face is that the alcoholics in the family can be either (or sometimes both) the violent one or those who receives the violence.

Getting intoxicated from alcohol can mask what really is happening in any situation and instead of solving problems, will only worsen them. The first step alcoholics should take when quitting, is admit that there is something wrong and they cannot handle it on their own. You need to write down your goals and set rules so that quitting will be a lot of easier for you. Keep in mind that this is for your own good and in doing so, a brighter and healthier future awaits you.
